  • All current or former owners, or operators of non-residential UST's as described above, are required to notify DEEP and the local fire marshal. For exemptions to this requirement, refer to Section 22a-449(d)-1(a) and Section 22a-449(d)-101(a) RCSA.

HOW TO APPLY FOR  A UST REMOVAL/ABANDONMENT PERMIT:

  • Once received in this Office, you will be contacted via email with the cost of the permit & a credit card payment link to make payment. Applications will not be reviewed without payment. 

** Please note that the "Call Before You Dig (CBYD)#" is REQUIRED.


Removal Requirements for Underground Storage Tanks

Home improvement contractors conducting residential underground heating oil storage tank (UST) removal or replacement must comply with the following:

  • Maintain liability insurance coverage of one million dollars ($1,000,000)
  • Successful completion of both of the following Department of Energy and Environmental Protection approved Hazardous Material Training Programs:
    1. Occupational Safety & Heath Administration’s (OSHA’s) 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Training per 29 CFR 1910.120, and subsequent annual 8-hr refresher training
    1. International Codes Council’s (ICC’s) UST Tank Decommissioning U2 Training

Note: UST refers to both a “residential underground heating oil storage tank system” and an “underground storage tank system” as defined in CT General Statutes 20-419.
