General Project Information

The Town of Manchester Department of Public Works, Engineering Division is proposing various pedestrian, bicyclist, and non-vehicular roadway user safety improvements at various locations throughout the Town of Manchester.  This webpage will be revised to include a variety of projects being proposed, currently in design, currently in construction, and recently completed.  

Buckley School Children Crossing

Rectangular, Rapid Flashing Beacon

The Town of Manchester Department of Public Works, Engineering Division proposes to install at Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon also known as an R.R.F.B at the School Children mid-block crosswalk at Buckley School on Vernon Street, in the Town of Manchester. Other appurtenant work includes replacement of sidewalk ramps to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, installation of pedestal foundations, restoration of lawn areas, and traffic control.

This work is funded through the "Enhanced Pedestrian Crossings" Program under the Department of Public Works Capital Budget for FY 2021.  

Route 83 (N Main Street) Road Diet

The Connecticut Department of Transportation, District 1 Maintenance Office (CTDOT) proposes the pavement rehabilitation of Route 83 under the 2022 Vendor In Place (VIP) Paving Program.  The CTDOT in coordination with the Town of Manchester Department of Public Works, Engineering Division proposes to revise the pavement markings on Route 83 (N Main St) between Hilliard Street and Oakland Street under the VIP Project to implement a "road diet". The Road Diet will reduce the number of travel lanes in the subject area from four lanes to three lanes, where applicable. The new configuration will provide one travel lane in each direction, a Two-way, Left-turn (TWLT) vehicle lane in the center of North Main Street, between North School Street and Oakland Street, and minimum five-foot wide shoulders.  This Road Diet will be similar to the Road Diet undertaken by the Town on Broad Street. This work will be completed by CTDOT Forces.

This work is funded through the Connecticut Department of Transportation's "Vendor In Place" (VIP) Paving Program. 

Minor work needed on the Town owned and maintained portion of North Main Street's eastbound approach will be undertaken by the Department of Public Works to accommodate the Road Diet. This will include the reconfiguration to a dedicated left-turn lane, through-lane, and right-turn lane. Signs and pavement markings will be updated.

This work is funded through the Engineering Division Traffic Signal Maintenance Annual Budget.
