Our Mission Statement:

The Commission promotes and encourages the preservation of the Cheney Brothers National Historic Landmark District by building awareness and understanding of the significance and unique historic character of the District, and by advising town government regarding the impact of any development and restoration of properties in the District.

To Encourage Preservation, the Commission:

With assistance from the Planning Department, created the District gateway signs and street-sign toppers
Reviews District property owner applications for exterior restorations and, based on retaining the District's historic integrity, recommends action to the Planning & Zoning Commission
Recognizes historic preservation by property owners with our Annual Preservation Awards Ceremony
Leads walking tours of the District
Distributes information about the District to new mansion owners

The Cheney Commission recognizes Manchester property owners who have improved their property in a manner that preserves its historic value and character.

Through their example, they show that we can enhance the present and future of Manchester without discarding its past.

About the Commission

The Cheney Brothers National Historic Landmark District Commission is an advisory commission dedicated to promoting, encouraging and securing the preservation and rehabilitation of the Cheney Brothers National Historic Landmark District. The Commission advises the Planning and Zoning Commission on all development applications for properties in the Historic Zone which is a part of the district. The Commission also advises the Planning and Zoning Commission on zoning regulation and zoning map amendments, and the Town Board of Directors on publicly funded development activity in the district. If you own a property inside the Landmark District you may contact the Planning department for advice on renovations or changes you are considering for your property.
