Bridge No. 076012 carries Hilliard Street over Bigelow Brook in Manchester, CT.  The bridge consists of a single span reinforced concrete slab with bituminous concrete overlay supported on reinforced concrete abutments.  The 14 foot long bridge was built in 1933 and originally carried the local trolly before being converted to vehicle traffic.  The bridge is located just upstream of the confluence of Bigelow Brook and the Hockanum River.  Based on Bridge Inspection report findings, the bridge has been selected next and programmed for future replacement.

Scope of Work

The proposed project includes the removal of the existing bridge structure and the replacing it with a 30’ wide x 6’ high, three-sided precast concrete frame supported with micropiles.  It includes reconstructing the bituminous concrete roadway and the installation of precast concrete wingwalls, 3 tube bridge rail and metal beam guide rail.  The proposed bridge cross section is 30’ curb to curb with a 5’ sidewalk on the southern side of the structure.  Existing utilities within the project limits include a sanitary sewer siphon, water main, gas main and overhead power and communications lines. Limited relocations of certain utilities in the immediate area of the bridge are anticipated.

Project Status

AI Engineers of Middletown, CT were selected by the Town of Manchester to design and assist with permitting for the replacement bridge. Field survey and basemapping were prepared by the Manchester Public Works Engineering Division Survey Unit. A construction date will be determined once additional funding is securred. The Town anticipates scheduling a Public Informational Meeting to present and discuss the project with residents once a Preliminary Design Plan is completed. Additional information will be posted to this page when it becomes available.
