History Walk in the North End
The public is invited to a free history walk on Sunday, November 5, at 1:00 p.m., starting at 14 North Main Street, viewing businesses of the past, such as Apel’s Opera House, constructed in 1888. Bernard Apel came from Germany to the U.S about 1874 and soon started an “undertaking” business. He later dealt in furniture, stoves, trunks and traveling bags, pianos, sewing machines, and “upholstering in all its branches” We’ll visit Woodbridge and Hudson Streets, and return via Main Street, about one mile total. Much of the business area of the old North End was demolished during Urban Renewal in the 1960s, including the railroad depot, restaurants, grocery, hardware, variety stores, professional offices, and a pharmacy. Rain or shine. This is one of the 23 bicentennial walks in 2023, celebrating Manchester’s 200th birthday. Details about the walks: http://www.manchesterhistory.org/Booklet23WalksWeb.pdf
