The Nu Haven Kapelye will perform an afternoon concert of klezmer music starting at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 4, at the Unitarian Universalist Society East at 153 Vernon Street West, Manchester, CT.
Nu Haven Kapelye is a multi-generational, multi-ethnic klezmer band from New Haven and Southern New England’s largest klezmer ensemble. It incorporates traditional elements of klezmer from Eastern Europe, drawing on modern interpretations, big band, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Band leader David Chevan says, “We love to see people get up and dance at our events, so wear your dancing shoes.”
Klezmer music was typically played at Jewish celebrations, especially weddings, in Eastern Europe. It draws from centuries-old Jewish traditions and has been influenced by other cultures and musical styles. Klezmer can be wistful or joyous. It is often performed for dancing.
